Steel shooting is the ultimate display of Speed and Accuracy. Like other practical shooting disciplines, there is a division for almost every type of hand gun, however that is where steel shooting deviates from other shooting disciplines. In steel shooting there is no power factor. All the targets are steel targets, and you just need to hit the targets to score. Targets do not fall like in USPSA, IDPA, or ICORE. All the stages consist of 5 separate strings of fire of five shots each, with the worst time of the stage being thrown out.
Steel shooting offers a port of entry to the shooting sports that is far less intimidating than practical shooting. Steel shooting provides an excellent starting place for young or beginning shooters. It also provides a venue for those who are not as mobile as they used to be and would like to remain involved in the shooting sports. All this provides an alternative for those who might otherwise be lost to shooting.
Steel matches typically require the use of a semi-automatic type pistol or revolver of 9mm/.38 Special or larger caliber. There is also a division for rim fire pistols as well. A holster that securely holds the gun and covers the trigger guard is required for center fire pistols. A holster is not required for rim fire pistols. 5 magazines is recommended, however you can get away with just 3.
